Vancouver: On Foot, By Bike or on the Water in Kitsilano

Share the article

Once a hippie haven in the 1960s, Kitsilano (or Kits, as the locals call it) has retained its free-spirited vibe while evolving into one of Vancouver’s most sought-after neighbourhoods. Wellness and nature are part of everyday life here—you’ll see yogis stretching on the beach, surfers cycling with boards in tow, and café-goers deep in conversation about politics and sustainability. With its charming architecture, colourful houses and wellness atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to wander, especially at sunset when the sky lights up over the ocean.

Hadden Park

Vancouver’s natural environment is so magnificent it’s almost unreal. It’s the perfect backdrop for water yoga, a challenging but inspiring activity that’s growing rapidly in North America’s temperate coastal cities. Pedal over to Hadden Park and opt for a water yoga session on a board.

Start your morning on West 4th Avenue

Start your day with breakfast at Café Zen, a Kitsilano institution. The atmosphere is warm, the coffee is strong and the portions are generous. If you’re hungry, go for the Lumberjack, a Canadian classic with eggs, roasted potatoes and crispy bacon. When you are full, take a stroll down West 4th Avenue, the neighbourhood’s lively shopping strip. You’ll find eco-friendly boutiques, independent bookstores, outdoor gear shops and trendy cafes, all in a relaxed, community-focused environment.

Unwind on Kitsilano Beach

No visit to Kits is complete without a stop at Kitsilano Beach. Lined with a scenic walkway where joggers and cyclists pass by all day, it’s the ideal place to soak up the neighbourhood’s active, outdoorsy spirit. For the more adventurous, try stand-up paddleboarding or swim laps in the heated saltwater pool with its stunning mountain views. Want to take it easy? Spread a towel on the sand, sip an iced coffee from a nearby stand and take in the stunning bay views.

Sunset over the ocean

When the golden hour arrives, Kitsilano is transformed into a glowing masterpiece. The best place to watch the sunset? Hadden Park, where the evening light shimmers on the water in a spectacle that never gets old. Grab a bench or head over to Vanier Park for an even better view of downtown lighting up in the distance.

Dinner at Fable, a local and sustainable experience

End the day at Fable, one of Kitsilano’s most popular restaurants, renowned for its farm-to-table approach. Chef Trevor Bird, a former Top Chef Canada contestant, creates simple yet flavourful dishes using ultra-local ingredients. From homemade bread to handcrafted ketchup, everything is made in-house, showcasing the best of British Columbia produce. Take one bite and you’ll see why Kitsilano is a foodie’s paradise.
