Preparing your Solo Female Travel Adventure

Share the article

More and more women are choosing to travel alone, whether they are single or in a relationship. One of the biggest advantages of this type of holiday? No compromises. Whether you want to explore a museum, spend an afternoon at the beach or try skydiving, the itinerary is entirely up to you!

Of course, some may wonder if travelling alone as a woman is a good idea. To them we say: absolutely, as long as you take the necessary precautions.

The biggest concerns for female solo travellers often arise before departure. But once you’re there, you’ll find that the world is a lot less scary than it seems. Take the time to research destinations that are suitable for solo travel. You’ll find that these adventures will help you get to know yourself better. After your first experience, you’ll understand where your comfort zone is and how far you’re willing to go to get out of it.

Not all destinations are ideal for female solo travellers, but Europe and America are full of safe and welcoming places.

Whether you’re a beginner looking for new experiences, a budding traveller or an experienced adventurer, here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions about the safety of women travelling alone.

Does it take courage to travel alone?

It’s often said that women who travel alone are brave. But not all adventurers are born that way! Travelling is something you learn, step by step, at your own pace.

If you’re a beginner and the idea of travelling alone scares you, start with a short trip to a beach destination on an all-inclusive package. This will allow you to get used to being on your own in a safe and comfortable environment. Join organised tours to discover new cultures in a guided environment. Give yourself time; the traveller in you will eventually awaken!

If you’ve been on a few solo trips, you’ll find that the more you travel alone, the more you appreciate the unexpected and the freedom to make spontaneous decisions. You’ll get to know yourself better and might even try things you wouldn’t have dared at home. In Europe, why not rent a car and explore the countryside? It’s freeing, you’ll see!

Nothing is impossible for the thrill-seeking adventurer. Skydiving, wild camping, kayaking… these activities are not just for men! Adventurers will tell you that when you travel and don’t know anyone, you can become the person you want to be. So if adventure calls to you, go for it!

After all, travelling alone isn’t really about bravery, it’s about curiosity and an open mind. Give it a go and if you enjoy the experience, great! If not, at least you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you tried.

Should you fear loneliness?

It’s true that it’s nice to share the highlights of a trip with friends. That’s what many beginners are afraid of.

But travelling alone will make you more approachable, more open to meeting people than if you were travelling as a couple or with friends. You’ll be able to make connections and find travel companions if you wish. An easy way to start a conversation with strangers is to ask them to take a picture of you and offer to do the same for them. Even if it doesn’t lead to a friendship, at least you’ll have a nice photo that’s different from the usual solo travel selfies!

Is it really safe?

Travel safety often comes down to a few basic precautions – good for everyone, men and women alike.

The more you know about the local culture and traditions of your destination, the less likely you are to make a mistake that could jeopardise your safety.

Here are some essential tips:

  • Walk confidently with a mobile phone in hand and memorise the emergency numbers for the country you’re visiting.
  • Don’t carry valuables or large amounts of cash.
  • If you’re told to avoid certain streets or neighbourhoods, follow the advice of the locals.
  • Familiarise yourself with local customs to avoid faux pas! For example, bring a scarf to cover your shoulders or legs in religious sites.
  • Learn some basic words. Knowing how to say hello, please and thank you is always a plus when travelling!

The tourism industry is offering more and more solo travel packages, some of which are even reserved for women. Even hostels now have women-only sections. So don’t hesitate!
