Share the article

Although the humble taco can be found everywhere from Austin to Austria, there is nothing like a taco in Mexico. The tortilla is simply a carrier for tasty fillings, and so tacos are very regional. What you may see in Mexico City you cannot find in Cancun, and the Veracruz style of taco is different than that in Oaxaca.

Each city has its own best taco, for this list we’ve focused on the coastal cities. If you love a good tortilla check out where to get the best tacos in Mexico.

Cancun

One of the most popular destinations for sun holidays, there are many great resort options. However, locals know that the best place for tacos is outside the ADO bus station. Look for two women selling freshly made chile relleno tacos. Not too spicy and you’ll get lovely melted cheese in these peppers, vegetarian friendly but also great for carnivores.

Veracruz

You cannot discuss the best tacos in Mexico without including the port city of Veracruz. This city is so well known for its good food you’ll often find restaurants in other regions quote that their dishes are in the Veracruz style.

It’s tough to go wrong in Veracruz but if you’re looking for a modern restaurant with a view check out El Canda located on the river with a number of options for tacos and other great local dishes

Playa del Carmen

Just down the road from Cancun is the equally popular Playa del Carmen. Unlike Cancun, many of the resorts are in town and so it’s easy to walk to taco stands for a variety of options, including vendors who understand vegan needs.

Most people will suggest El Fogon as it’s been a favourite for years, but instead check out newcomer Don Sirloin, which is quickly becoming a local favourite.

Ixtapa

Ixtapa and it’s sister resort Zihuatanejo have become popular as they are less crowded than other popular destinations in Mexico. Relaxed Ixtapa has modern resorts and also fantastic food. Without a doubt one of the most popular spots is Sr Taco Grill and you’ll find lots of fellow travellers there.

It’s worth noting that the salsa and hot sauces are very hot so try a bit before putting them on your tacos.

Puerto Vallarta

There are so many great taco stands in Puerto Vallarta the best place to find it is in the streets. Adventurous eaters will delight in options like head, feet and offal while more timid tastes will love the tacos al pastor, which many consider to be the king of tacos.

A great place to start is at El Flaco, which is known for its al pastor. It is located on the corner of I Vallarta & F Madero, just look for the crowd as it’s a favourite of many.

Cozumel

Just a quick ferry ride from Playa del Carmen leads you to Cozumel, which is popular with divers as it has the second longest stretch of coral in the world. Although it attracts many tourists, it’s also home to great authentic tacos.

In Cozumel enjoy local shrimp tacos at El Sazon de Cameron. If you are with friends who don’t like shrimp there is also beef and meatless. There is an English menu and the staff are friendly and accommodating.

Los Cabos

The region stretches from Cabo San Lucas to San José del Cabo and while it’s known to have many restaurants specifically for tourists you can still get a local flavour at Tacos Vicky.  However, while locals will call it Tacos Vicky, Vicky is no longer there but you will find Tony and it’s now called Tony’s Tacos depending on who you speak with in town.  However, this taco joint continues to serve some of the best tacos in Los Cabos.
