If the first image you have of this Jamaican city is more akin to Disneyland than to Bob Marley’s laid-back lifestyle, it would be a shame not to dig deeper to discover its hidden treasures.

Discover Downtown Montego Bay instead of the Hip Strip
Gloucester Avenue, more commonly known as the “Hip Strip,” is truly what you might call a tourist factory. Big chains, American prices, hustlers galore: this is certainly not where you will find the laid-back and zen vibe unique to Jamaica. However, if you head down to Downtown Montego Bay, the contrast is striking. While locals are accustomed to tourists and may still try to gently hustle you, you will find more affordable spots and, above all, a much more authentic side. We particularly recommend the Nyam’n’Jam restaurant, where the goat curry is well worth the trip. As you stroll through the streets, you’ll notice colorful murals and local markets where artisans sell handmade crafts, giving you a taste of Jamaica’s rich culture.
Go to Doctor’s Cave Beach at the end of the day
On paper, this public but paid beach ($6 US per day) located on the Hip Strip is a dream with its turquoise lagoon, pristine beach, and fine sand. At 10 a.m., forget this sweet vision. Entire busloads of tourists pour in for better or worse: it depends. If you like the “package” atmosphere, go ahead. If, on the contrary, a bit of solitude wouldn’t hurt, head to the beach after 3:30 p.m. You will enjoy more privacy and share your towel space with the local rich. Additionally, a sunset on the beach always has its dose of magic. Plus, the late afternoon light makes for the best photos, ensuring your memories are Instagram-ready.
Bet on local restaurants on the Hip Strip
Amidst the chains that line Gloucester Avenue, there are little gems of local restaurants. We recommend the Irie House restaurant, a humble eatery where you can enjoy good fried chicken for 600 Jamaican dollars (about $6 CAD). Expect prices to fluctuate depending on whether you are a local or a tourist, but the service will always be very warm. The ambiance is cozy, often accompanied by live reggae music, adding to the authentic Jamaican dining experience.
Another good tip, if you venture to the “Craft Market” on the Hip Strip: ask a vendor where the workers’ canteen is. At lunchtime, workers leave the construction sites and head to the far end of the market, down a tiny alley, to get boxes full of chicken, fish, or goat meat, accompanied by rice and coleslaw. Once again, the person who takes you there will expect a tip in return, but the experience is truly refreshing and the price (about $5 CAD per person) is affordable. The bustling market scene, with its vibrant energy and diverse stalls, offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals.
Finally, to enjoy some delicious Jerk chicken, head to Pork Pit, a sort of local fast food that is absolutely delicious. Avoid the crowds during the day, and go there in the evening around 8 p.m. Not only will you have the restaurant to yourself, but the prices are also lowered to better suit the local clientele. The smoky, spicy aroma of the Jerk chicken is mouth-watering, and it’s the perfect way to end a day of exploration in Montego Bay.
