When you see Encuentro Beach, any preconceived notions about the Dominican Republic are put to rest. This virtually unspoilt beach, with a few isolated huts tucked away in the lush vegetation and not a resort in sight, offers a refreshing escape. Located on a small stretch of the northwest coast near Puerto Plata, Encuentro Beach is one of the perfect spots for unspoilt surfing and kitesurfing on the island. Shall we get going?
Staying at a design motel with a Caribbean touch
We checked into El Encuentro Surf Lodge, the perfect place for surf enthusiasts and travellers looking to relax. This motel-inspired property exudes a colourful, airy Caribbean vibe. Our spacious studio, ideal for a group of 3 or 4, was a stone’s throw from the restaurant and directly opposite a beautiful, large pool, inviting us to take our first dip. Afterwards, you can sunbathe on the deck chairs provided or enjoy a refreshing drink on the colourful, sunny terrace.
El Encuentro Surf Lodge is thoughtfully designed with a range of amenities for all types of guests, including free yoga classes, a surf school, fast Wi-Fi and private on-site parking. With a friendly, bohemian vibe, this young hotel caters to families and solo travellers alike. A la carte breakfast is included in the room rate, and there’s a special kids’ table in the restaurant, complete with toys to keep the little ones entertained while they wait. And what can I say about the staff? They’re absolutely charming, especially with children, which adds to the welcoming atmosphere.
Now it’s time to hit the beach! Encuentro Beach is just a three-minute walk from the hotel, accessible via a private path lined with vibrant flowers and tropical plants. Is it paradise? Yes, it is!

Surfers and kitesurfers share the waves at Encuentro Beach in the Dominican Republic in a harmonious blend of skill and enthusiasm. In the morning, the high tide creates a perfect spot for surfers, while the low tide and afternoon winds create the perfect conditions for experienced kitesurfers. The sight of colourful sails against the backdrop of the ocean is a spectacular ballet to behold.
For those new to the sport, a gentle introduction to surfing is easily accessible. We chose to learn with the Cabarete Surf Company, a popular local school with experienced and qualified instructors. The early morning hours are ideal for beginners, offering some of the best waves before the beach gets busier. A note for visitors: the beach has a fair amount of pebbles, so water shoes are recommended for those with sensitive feet.
Encuentro Beach is also a perfect place for families, thanks to its natural rock pools, which provide a safe and fun environment for children and toddlers to splash and play.
Our favourite restaurants in Playa Encuentro
The area around Encuentro Beach in the Dominican Republic is easy to explore on foot and offers a variety of great dining options.
Just steps from the sea, we loved the small bohemian beach huts serving fresh juices, brunch and light, healthy meals. A standout was Pura Vida Encuentro, where the relaxed atmosphere and delicious food made it a must-visit.
With waves crashing in the background, Coconuts Restaurant at the Hideaway Beach Hotel offers an international menu with a focus on grilled fish. Nearby, a ‘sea view’ garden provides a nice place for children to stretch their legs while adults enjoy the scenic surroundings.
Of course, the hotel’s El Encuentro restaurant remains a convenient, simple and delicious choice for meals throughout the day.
In the heart of the village, we also enjoyed exploring Plaza Encuentro, a mini open-air mall with restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and yoga and exercise studios. Don’t miss brunch and pastries at the 100% PAN artisan bakery, which serves up a variety of freshly baked treats.
For a special dining experience, take a stroll along the boardwalk and in about 30 minutes you’ll reach Natura Cabana Resort. Here you’ll find two restaurants: Karaya by day and Natura by night. These restaurants offer a unique, natural setting overlooking a magnificent, wild, sandy beach with powerful waves crashing against the shore. The atmosphere is one of positive energy and a deep connection with nature.
For even more nightlife and culinary delights, head to Cabarete, just a fifteen minute drive from Encuentro Beach. With its vibrant scene, Cabarete is the perfect place to enjoy late night fun and delicious food. The party is just getting started as the sun goes down, making it a great way to end an evening on the Caribbean coast.
