Solo Female Travel: A Guide to Safe, Fun, and Affordable Adventures

Share the article

Travelling, at its core, is all about stepping out of your comfort zone. It’s about leaving the familiar behind to explore a new city, culture and landscape—to embrace the unknown. And that’s what makes it so exciting! Solo female travel is no different. In fact, it’s an incredibly rewarding and empowering travel experience, and it’s often easier than you might think.

There are many things that make solo travel worthwhile, and the world is full of safe and welcoming destinations that will give you an amazing first solo trip.

The moment you get on a plane alone, you’ve already taken a big step – no matter where you’re going.

Sure, it can be nerve-wracking at first. But it’s totally doable and, most importantly, an incredible achievement that will fill you with confidence and pride!

Is it a good idea to travel alone as a woman?

The biggest advantage of travelling alone as a woman? Absolute freedom! You can sleep in, eat at the same restaurant two nights in a row just because you really liked their dessert, shop in charming boutiques or swap a hike for a museum visit. With nobody to stop you, and no need to compromise!

It’s a great way to get away from it all, focus on yourself and experience the world on your own terms. You can choose the destination with intent, set the pace, the budget and the activities—without having to consider anyone else’s preferences.

But travelling alone doesn’t have to mean booking a month-long trek around Sri Lanka. Start small! A short trip to a nearby town is an easy way to test the waters. If you like it, you’ll be ready to go further!

Being solo isn’t the same as being lonely

Female solo travellers often worry about feeling lonely, but the reality is quite the opposite! You’ll quickly find that solo travellers are more approachable than groups, making spontaneous conversations and connections much easier. And a key aspect of this travel experience.

See solitude as an asset rather than a disadvantage.

You’ll be surprised at how welcoming and friendly the locals can be. Most people who approach you will do so with kindness and genuine curiosity. They’ll be happy to share their favourite spots—hidden cafes, stunning views or local gems that aren’t in any guidebook.

Don’t miss out on these amazing encounters!

What about destination groups trips for women traveling alone?

If you’re not ready to venture out completely alone, tour companies offer fantastic group trips designed for solo female travelers. Whether it’s a yoga retreat in Mexico, a road trip through Europe, or an adventure in the Amazon, group travel offers security, cost savings, and the chance to meet like-minded travelers.

It’s also a good way to ease into solo female travel, knowing you’ll have company while still enjoying some independence. Plus, you’ll likely form lasting friendships with women who share your mindset!

Staying safe while traveling alone

I’d like to say that travelling alone as a woman is just as easy as travelling alone as a man, but the reality is a little different. No matter where you are, it’s important to take some basic precautions to stay safe and avoid risky situations.

The key is to stay calm—pay attention to details and the people around you, be aware of your surroundings, and trust your instincts. In many ways, it’s no different from the precautions you would normally take at home.

That said, it is perfectly normal to feel isolated or nervous about the unknown. But don’t let it stop you from following your dreams!

Personally, when I’m travelling alone either on holiday or on a stopover after a flight, I keep my phone in my hand or at least within reach in a small shoulder bag. It’s handy when I want to discreetly consult a navigation application to get my bearings. I say discreetly because it’s the best way to walk around in peace without being disturbed.

Also, when I want to be in my own bubble and not be disturbed by undesirables, I play my favourite playlist through my headphone.

Safety tips for solo female travelers:

  • I make it a habit to look confident, even (especially) when I have no idea where I’m going!
  • Ask friendly locals which areas are safe and which are not.
  • If you are going off the beaten track, research transport options beforehand—even in trendy cities!
  • Use an anti-theft backpack or cross-body bag.
  • Remember to plan your journey from the airport to your first accommodation, especially if you have to travel overnight. Before you get lost on the ground, it’s best to prioritise the efficiency of a simple, safe journey.
  • If you’re planning a more adventurous trip, such as scuba diving, mountain hiking or camping, leave a copy of your itinerary with someone close to you before you leave. And check in regularly with them!

Is solo travel more expensive?

Is it really more expensive for solo travellers than for duos or groups? Not really, if you do your research!

In fact, there’s no real difference in the cost of activities, food or flights. The main difference is in the cost of accommodation and car hire, because you’re on your own. This needs to be planned in advance.

A good way to save money is to opt for a private room in a good quality hostel. Some are even reserved for women only. It doesn’t matter how old you are! As well as saving money, it’s a great way to meet people, go on guided tours or enjoy the nightlife.
