Beyond the All-Inclusive: The Best Things to Do in Punta Cana

Share the article

We often arrive in Punta Cana with a pre-set image in our minds: perfect turquoise waters, tropical paradise with thousands of swaying coconut palms, and a string of resorts promising a worry-free escape. Yet, the moment you venture beyond the gates of your all-inclusive, you quickly discover an amazing island deeply rooted in nature and culture—a territory meant to be explored by foot, by water, and by taste.

If you’re like me and want to see a different side of the Dominican Republic, you’ll find that day trips from your inclusive resort in Punta Cana offer an incredible variety of activities and the chance to meet the warm, welcoming people who call this island home.

Punta Cana isn’t just a sun destination; it’s the gateway to the southeast coast and the “real” Dominican Republic.

Excursions to Dominican Republic beaches and beyond

The Caribbean Sea is the beating heart of the Dominican Republic. It’s always there in the background, even when you move away from the hotels. However, experiencing the ocean away from private white-sand beaches completely changes the vibe.

1. Macao Beach

At Playa Macao, located just north of Punta Cana on the eastern coast, you experience the ocean’s raw intensity. It’s a bit wilder here, with stronger waves that attract surfers of all levels. I tried my luck at one of the many surf schools lining the shore… let’s just say I have more talent for playing in the waves than taming them with a board!

On weekends, Dominican families arrive with coolers, chairs, and music. The atmosphere is festive and authentic. You aren’t just in a tourist setting; at Playa Macao, you’re in the heart of local life. Walking along this beach feels like entering a simpler, truer world.

It’s truly one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic and a great place to spend the day.

2. Luxury catamaran tours

Seeing the coastline from the water offers a stunning perspective. Catamaran cruises along the shore reveal an infinite line of palm trees and lush greenery. For me, there’s nothing like the sea breeze and the gentle swell to help you totally unplug. You can swim in crystal-clear waters and snorkel among tropical fish without a care in the world.

3. Saona and Catalina

If you are looking for the ultimate things to do in Punta Cana, a trip to the nearby islands is a must.

  • Saona Island: This remains one of the most memorable and accessible day trips. With its white sand and postcard-perfect scenery, you can spend the day exploring and tasting local specialties right on the beach.
  • Catalina Island: A bit more low-key, this spot is a favorite for those who prioritize water clarity and vibrant coral reefs.

Cueva de las Maravillas

One of the most surprising excursions I took was to the Cueva de las Maravillas. Located between Punta Cana and the capital, this cave is a natural and historical sanctuary. As you descend, soft lighting reveals spectacular limestone formations, stalactites, and stalagmites.

The highlight? The Taíno pictograms still visible on the walls, dating back to long before the Europeans arrived. It is a humbling experience to see what nature and history have created over centuries.

What are the top things to do in Punta Cana? Hoyo Azul!

By leaving the beaches behind, you dive into an entirely different universe: tropical rainforests, lagoons, and protected parks that invite you to lose yourself in nature.

Hoyo Azul is one of these magical places, located just a short distance from Juanillo Beach. Nestled at the foot of a towering limestone cliff, this intensely blue cenote situated within Scape Park offers a wide range of activities, from ziplining to diving and swimming in its refreshing waters. High-octane thrills are guaranteed!

Chocolate, coffee, and rum

Dominican culture is best discovered through the taste buds. Visiting a cocoa or coffee plantation helps you understand the deep connection between the land and these world-famous products.

However, if there is one experience that sums up the Dominican spirit, it’s a rum tasting. At spots like the Oliver Rum Lab or Ron Barceló in San Pedro de Macorís, the world of Dominican rum is festive and intriguing. Learning about the aromas, aging process, and blending is both educational and social (for those 18+, of course!).

Walking through history in Santo Domingo

day trip from punta cana - excursion depuis punta cana

You can’t stay in Punta Cana without taking a cultural trip to Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage capital. In the Colonial Zone, a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and iconic buildings lets you get lost in Dominican history.

  • The MAR Museum (Museo de las Atarazanas Reales): Dedicated to maritime archaeology and famous local shipwrecks.
  • El Conde Street: Where local artisans gather to sell colorful artwork and traditional souvenirs.
  • Mesón d’Bari: (Recommended) Stop here for a bite—the décor and Caribbean flavors are worth the visit alone.

My favorite cultural activity: a day trip to Altos de Chavón

If you are looking for unique things to do near Punta Cana, the Mediterranean-style village of Altos de Chavón offers a completely different vibe. Built entirely of stone to resemble a 16th-century Italian village, it provides a welcome break from the typical scenery of beaches and palm trees.

I absolutely loved exploring the artisan workshops and art galleries here. The highlight, however, is the massive Roman-style amphitheater, which has hosted legendary world-class performances. I recommend simply letting your feet guide you through the narrow cobblestone alleys—and don’t miss the stunning panoramic view of the Chavón River valley from the chapel.

Getting around Punta Cana by car

While many of the best things to do in Punta Cana are accessible via guided excursions, exploring on your own offers a wonderful sense of freedom. If you’re considering a car rental in the Dominican Republic, here are a few insider tips:

  • Driving in the Dominican Republic is often described as “chaotic.” Traffic norms and road conditions can vary significantly, especially once you leave the main tourist hubs. Pack your patience and keep your wits about you!
  • If you plan on heading off the beaten path into nature, investing in a compact SUV or 4×4 will make navigating rural roads much smoother.
  • Ensure you opt for “all-risk” insurance (locally known as Casa del Conductor). This is vital to have in addition to any basic coverage provided by your credit card.
  • The easiest option is Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), which hosts several major international rental agencies. However, it’s worth comparing rates with local agencies in town or even at your all-inclusive resort, as they sometimes offer better deals.
  • To snag the best prices, try to reserve your car early—especially during the high season from December to April.

Honestly, for many travelers, the simplest way to see the sights is to hire one of the many taxis or private drivers who offer full-day services. This is a fantastic way to see the country without the stress of navigating local traffic or managing a rental car! To arrange this, simply reach out to your resort representative for a trusted recommendation.

Stepping outside the resort to explore Punta Cana and its surroundings taught me that this isn’t just a place to rest. It’s a territory to be discovered step-by-step. Behind the “perfect” beaches are forests, villages, flavors, and stories that give depth to your vacation—and leave you wanting to come back again and again.
