What to Pack, Drink, and Wear: A Flight Attendant’s Guide to Flying Well

Share the article

For the past seven years, I’ve worked as a flight attendant, and I love helping hundreds of passengers kick off their dream getaways. Whether you’re jetting off to the Caribbean, South America, Europe, or Africa, you settle in for a few hours and count on us to make your journey as comfortable as possible right from the moment you step on board. Beyond our signature warm welcome and service, though, there are a few simple steps you can add to your pre-trip routine to truly maximize your comfort in the air. Here are my go-to tips—so your vacation truly begins the moment we take off!

Stay hydrated

My first piece of advice in this checklist is probably the most important one: drink plenty of water! Since cabin air is pressurized and exceptionally dry, make sure to drink water regularly throughout the flight. And if you’re having a drink to celebrate the start of your vacation, alternate with water to avoid multiplying the effects of alcohol at 33,000 feet.

It’s the perfect pairing to kick off your getaway on the right foot!

By the way, you are more than welcome to bring your reusable water bottle on board the plane. The only rule is that it must be empty when you go through airport security. You can easily refill it at the free water fountains once you’re in the international terminal—and, of course, you can always ask us for water on board during the flight. If you can, bring an insulated bottle to keep your water ice-cold. That way, you won’t even have to wait for the beverage cart to get a drink.

Plus, that bottle will come in super handy throughout your entire vacation. It’s a fantastic way to cut down on single-use plastics and shrink your carbon footprint!

Tech essentials to pack in your carry-on

Along with packing your wired earphones for the entertainment system—or those magical noise-canceling headphones!—have you thought about putting together a playlist of your favorite soothing songs? It’s the perfect recipe for getting some quality rest and sleep. Just remember to download it to your device before the flight so it’s ready to play once we hit 33,000 feet (10,000 meters)!

If you’d rather leave the playlist to us, our in-flight entertainment system features audio content specifically designed to help you relax, unwind, and even slip into a meditative state.

Finally, don’t forget to toss your portable charger and cables into your carry-on. That way, you’ll arrive at your destination with a fully charged battery and total peace of mind. Plus, you can easily plug in on board, as most of our aircraft are equipped with power outlets and USB-A ports!

Gear up for maximum comfort

If you want to catch some Zs and arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to go, a trusty pair of earplugs and an eye mask will be your absolute best sleep allies.

Heading somewhere with a major time difference? Start tweaking your sleep schedule just a little bit a few days before you leave to make the transition a breeze. You can even set your watch to your destination’s local time the moment you step on board!

My ultimate secret for a peaceful flight? I pack a small pouch with all my essentials and slip it right into the seat pocket in front of me. That way, everything is within arm’s reach, and I never have to contort myself or jump up every time I need something. Make sure it includes:

  • A toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Chewing gum to help pop your ears during takeoff and landing
  • Lip balm
  • Wired earphones and/or noise-canceling headphones
  • Your favorite face or eye mask, so you can turn your flight into a relaxing mini spa session
  • Your medication—always keep this in your carry-on!

Another brilliant way to boost your comfort and easily handle temperature shifts (both at the airport and on the plane, no matter the season!) is to wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily layer. You want outfits that won’t restrict your movement. Stick to natural fibers like cotton and wool, as they really let your skin breathe.

Finally, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring along a cozy scarf. That scarf will actually come in super handy later on your trip, whether you need to cover your shoulders while visiting cultural sites or want to lay it down for an impromptu picnic!

Prepare your appetite

Love to snack? Guilty as charged—me too! Following a specific diet, or worried you won’t feel like eating the main meal? Rest assured, we’ve got you covered.

  1. First of all, you are more than welcome to bring your own snacks in your carry-on, just as long as they comply with local customs regulations and airport security rules (especially regarding liquids).
  2. You can also treat yourself to items from our Bistro menu at any time during the flight—we’ve recently added several fresh, healthy, and locally sourced options.
  3. You can pre-order meals tailored to your dietary needs or specially designed for children. These meals are free and available on transatlantic flights, as well as flights to Peru and Brazil. Simply order them at least 72 hours before your departure via the Manage My Booking section on our website.

And if you need any assistance, our customer service team is always happy to help!

Treat yourself to the right seat

One of the most underrated ways to boost your in-flight comfort is choosing exactly where you sit.

Do you prefer the aisle or the window?
Do you need extra legroom?
Are you traveling with a baby?

Whether you have specific needs or just want maximum peace of mind, make sure to pre-select your seat when booking. It’s a small upgrade that makes a massive difference at 33,000 feet!

Quick tips for a comfortable flight

  • Keep the individual air vent above your seat open. It promotes better airflow and adds to your overall comfort.
  • Fasten your seatbelt at all times, even when the sign is turned off. I even recommend keeping it visible so that in the event of sudden turbulence, the crew won’t have to wake you up.
  • Also, it is important to walk around a bit to stretch your legs during a long flight. Take a few strolls up and down the aisles to relieve heavy legs and stimulate your blood circulation. You can do this whenever the crew is not actively serving or the seatbelt sign is turned off, as long as you are mindful of your fellow passengers. Also, take the time to stretch while waiting for the restroom!
  • And please—never walk barefoot in the cabin!
