Start your holiday at Doctor’s Cave Beach, one of Jamaica’s most famous beaches, known for its crystal-clear waters and white sand. It’s part of the Montego Bay Marine Park, so you can spot lots of marine creatures while snorkelling. Its calm waters are also perfect for stand-up paddleboarding.

2p.m.

Come lunchtime, follow the aroma of authentic Jamaican jerk chicken to The Pork Pit. Try the jerk chicken (or pork) with a fried dumpling called festival or with rice and peas. Or with both festival and rice and peas. That’s what I do! Then take your lunch to go to the park across the street and eat while taking in the beautiful view of the ocean.

4p.m.

Take a stroll along the Hip Strip and do a little shopping. Buy your Appleton rum (cheap!) at one of the many convenience stores lining the strip, where you’ll also find great coffee, spices and rum cake. Or stop in at one of the souvenir shops and get that One Love Bob Marley T-shirt you’ve always wanted! Then visit the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary just outside Montego Bay, home to some of Jamaica’s most beautiful species of birds. You can feed hummingbirds right out of your hand! It’s pretty amazing!

6p.m.

Hop on a catamaran cruise and watch the beautiful sunset with reggae playing in the background. Another great spot to catch the sunset is Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville while sipping on one of their famous margaritas on their patio. And while you’re there, why not take a whirl down the 37-metre-long waterslide from the rooftop terrace.

8p.m.

Lovers of reggae, for an authentic Jamaican evening, groove all the way to Pier 1, a waterfront, open-air restaurant that has more of a local vibe. You’ll feel like you’re on a ship while dining on Jamaican-style dishes, from peppered shrimp to jerk conch to curry goat. After dinner, stay for the entertainment—they have karaoke Mondays, Star Struck Wednesdays and Pier Pressure Fridays. Night owls can also return to Margaritaville and dance the night away at its seaside club.

11a.m.

You still have some time before boarding your plane? Soak up the rays and a little culture until the very last minute! Make your way to the bar outside the airport and order a Red Stripe Jamaican lager. It’s happy hour somewhere in the world, right?
