I fell in love with Split the moment I arrived. The truth is, you don’t need an extra reason to stop in Split—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Croatia’s second-largest city, it’s bursting with charm! With its historic streets, lively terraces, and Adriatic beaches, it has everything to offer. Wandering through its narrow alleyways (take your time—some lead to hidden treasures) and sipping on a cocktail (or several!) for hours at one of its inviting terraces is just part of the experience. Whether you’re drawn to history, the sea, gastronomy, or nature escapes, Split is the perfect destination to experience Croatia in all its facets.
Here are my top recommendations, tested and approved, to make the most of Split and its surroundings.
Exploring Split’s historic heart
It’s impossible to visit Split without getting lost in Diocletian’s Palace, a masterpiece of antiquity listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 294 and 305, it has served as an imperial villa, a fortress, and the city’s vibrant center. Today, it’s a maze of medieval alleyways, where cafés, boutiques, and Roman ruins coexist in a unique atmosphere.
At the heart of the palace, the Peristyle is one of the most breathtaking spots. Surrounded by elegant arcades, it leads to Saint Domnius Cathedral, whose bell tower offers a stunning panoramic view of Split. Fun fact: the square is also a favorite gathering place for street musicians and artists, adding even more charm to the site.
Leaving the palace walls, I couldn’t resist a local tradition: right next to the Golden Gate, a massive statue of Gregory of Nin awaits visitors. Touching his big toe is said to make wishes come true—so why not give it a try?
My favorite spots and tips in Split

🍷 Try Croatian wines: Dalmatian wines are delicious and affordable. Don’t hesitate to ask restaurant staff or wine shop experts for recommendations!
🍽️ Where to eat? Mazzgoon is a personal favorite—local flavors with a modern twist in a charming hidden courtyard.
🍹 Where to grab a drink? The Riva is a classic, but rooftop bars offer incredible sunset views over Split.
🌅 Best sunset spot: Marjan Hill or a waterfront terrace.
Enjoying the beaches and the Riva
After a morning of exploring, it’s time to head to the Riva, Split’s iconic waterfront promenade. Lined with palm trees and buzzing terraces, it’s the perfect place for a coffee or a glass of Croatian rosé while watching boats come and go from the harbor.
If the urge to swim strikes, Bačvice Beach is less than a 15-minute walk away. This is where locals play picigin, a traditional Dalmatian ball game played in shallow water. A bit too lively for my taste, I preferred heading to the quieter beaches around Marjan Hill, a natural park that also offers breathtaking views over the city and islands.
Setting sail: Dalmatian islands at your fingertips
One of the greatest joys of visiting Split is getting out on the water. From the harbor, ferries and boat tours take you to some of Croatia’s most stunning islands:
- Hvar, the ultimate jet-set island, where you might spot celebrity yachts while exploring the historic old town and hidden coves.
- Brač, home to Zlatni Rat, a famous white-pebble beach that shifts shape with the currents.
- Vis, a more remote and untouched island, known for its crystal-clear waters and the breathtaking Blue Cave of Biševo.
- Korčula, often called “Little Dubrovnik” for its medieval walls and renowned vineyards.
I opted for a tour combining Hvar, Brač, and the Blue Cave, and it was one of the best experiences of my trip.
The best day trips from Split

If you want to mix things up, Split is also a great base for day trips.
Trogir, a medieval town frozen in time
Located just 30 minutes away, Trogir is a UNESCO-listed gem. Built on a small island between the mainland and Čiovo, this town is a journey back in time with its cobbled streets, ancient churches, and Venetian palaces. The Saint Lawrence Cathedral, with its intricately carved portal, is a must-see.
The Saint John Chapel, the old courthouse, the town hall, the Čipiko Palace, and the clock tower are also worth visiting. A strange yet fascinating detail: the clock tower was once fitted with a “shame column”, where wrongdoers were publicly chained as punishment. The wooden pillar is gone, but the iron chains remain at the foot of the tower, right next to the courthouse.
Klis fortress: a mix of history and Game of Thrones
Less than 30 minutes from Split, Klis Fortress sits dramatically atop a rocky ridge, offering stunning panoramic views of the coastline. A key stronghold in Dalmatian history, it’s also famous as Meereen in Game of Thrones, making it a must-visit for history buffs and TV fans alike.
Krka National Park and its swimmable waterfalls
Just an hour’s drive away, Krka National Park is a natural paradise, famous for its spectacular waterfalls. Unlike Plitvice Lakes, you can actually swim under the waterfalls at Skradin, making for an unforgettable experience.
Makarska: where beaches meet mountains
About an hour and a half from Split, Makarska is a lively seaside town, perfect for a day of sunbathing, strolling along the waterfront, and exploring the historic old town. Plus, it offers incredible views of Mount Biokovo.
