But what many people don’t know is that Panama is first and foremost an extraordinary natural destination. This small Central American country is full of natural treasures just waiting to be discovered. You don’t have to be an experienced adventurer willing to explore the depths of the Darien jungle to immerse yourself in this lush nature. Just steps from the city, you will find true green gems that offer a perfect blend of biodiversity, breathtaking scenery and tranquillity.
Whether it’s tropical forests, natural parks or wildlife observatories, Panama offers a multitude of places where nature reigns supreme. Whether you are a birdwatcher, hiking enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, Panama has something to satisfy your desire for a change of scenery. And the best part is that this wild and preserved nature is often just minutes away from urban centres.
Nature in the city
For a first-hand look at biodiversity, visit the Biomuseo, which, as its name suggests, is dedicated to the country’s rich flora and fauna. The building, with its original and colourful architecture, was designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry. Inside, the modern museography tells the story of Panama’s geological and natural history. After this introduction, your legs will be itching to go out in search of these animals in their natural habitat.

Metropolitan Natural Park: An accessible tropical forest
You don’t have to go far to stroll through the tropical forest. The Metropolitan Natural Park is just 15 minutes from the city. It is accessible to everyone thanks to its well-maintained educational trails. Walking along these trails is a great way to observe birds; the park is home to no less than 200 different species. Take the time to stop to identify them and, above all, to listen to the melody that emanates from the forest.
Observation towers have also been installed to help you appreciate the different elements that make up this ecosystem, as well as to observe the city and realise how close it is. Other animals such as agoutis, coatis and monkeys can also be found in the park.

Soberania National Park: A birdwatcher’s paradise
Just 30 minutes from the city, near Gamboa, another natural area awaits you. This place is world famous for birdwatching: Soberania National Park and Pipeline Road. This 17-kilometre stretch of jungle along a pipeline is home to more than 500 species of birds, with motmots and trogons among the most emblematic. With a guide, you’ll increase your chances of seeing some of the rarest specimens. The Panama Rainforest Discovery Center even offers a 40-metre observation tower for bird watching in the canopy. It’s the kingdom of toucans and blue cotingas. Spending several days in the jungle is highly recommended to fully appreciate its richness.
Gatun Lake
You can also take the time to enjoy a cruise on Lake Gatun. Its proximity to the Panama Canal means you can get up close and personal with the giants of the sea, which is an unusual experience when you’re on a small boat. To see them up close, visit the Miraflores Locks, where cargo ships pass through the Panama Canal.
Your boat will sail between the green islands, home to several species of monkeys (capuchins, tamarins…), sloths and numerous birds. Keep an eye on the water too, as crocodiles are not uncommon here.
