This winter is the perfect time to take a family vacation in Cuba. With mended ties to the US, this Caribbean island is likely to be a destination on the rise over the coming years, so now is the perfect opportunity to enjoy before the crowds arrive.

Cuba has a series of great beach resorts that are enough to rival some of the best in the Caribbean, while there are some authentic towns and cities that make for wonderful places to explore. Consider these fun activities for your Cuba family vacation.

Wonderful Family Resorts

Many people do not realize that there are wonderful resorts to be found in the big coastal towns of Cuba. Many of these resorts are perfect for families, with features such as kids’ clubs and swimming pools with slides for children.

Varadero and the Cayos are among the most popular family destinations on the island, and these also offer easy access to beaches. For families with older children who may want to try some more adventurous activities, there are some great snorkeling and scuba diving sites for novices. There are also great areas for swimming, windsurfing and surfing, with beginner lessons available.

Child-Friendly Activities

A family vacation in Cuba needs more than just a few activities for children. One activity that many families don’t consider is going to see a local sports game. Many tour operators offer great package options, which include baseball, street performance in town centers and other group activities while off the resort.

For something everyone will love, don’t miss a trip to the Chocolate Museum in Havana—it is well worth the entrance fee.

Exploring Havana

The Cuban capital is vibrant and exciting, and while the adults will appreciate the architecture and colonial buildings of Old Havana, children will enjoy the El Morro Castle, where they can see the historic cannon mounted on the walls and play.

You are guaranteed that everyone will enjoy renting one of the old convertible cars to take a tour of the city for an hour, with the open top being perfect on a sunny day.

One of the real highlights is the ice cream in Havana, you can get a scoop of ice cream for just one peso. For an adult treat, the drinks are relatively inexpensive here, and international brands of beer and wine are commonly available.

Beaches and Natural Destinations

One of the great things about a visit to the Caribbean is that there is no shortage of beautiful beaches, and many of the family resorts will have lounge chairs, umbrellas and drinks service.

Children love to play on the beach, so make sure you apply the sunscreen generously, and share some quality family time as you let them enjoy paddling and building sand castles. Those looking for a different experience on their Cuba family vacation can take a trip to the Vinales National Park, where there are some lovely natural scenes, and some good horseback riding too.
