Located within the second largest volcano crater in the world, Antón Valley is a natural oasis west of Panama City. With its crisp micro-climate, unique geological setting featuring steep mountain walls overlooking a vast and flat floor, and rich biodiversity, Antón Valley attracts both Panamanian weekenders and visitors seeking a walk on the wild side. The journey through the hills to the jungly countryside offers a glimpse into Panama’s dense greenery and natural beauty.

Why visit Antón Valley?

Antón Valley, also known as El Valle de Antón, is situated about two hours west of Panama City, nestled in the lush mountains of Coclé Province. This picturesque valley, formed within an ancient volcanic crater, offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its cool, temperate climate, unique flora and fauna, and stunning natural landscapes make it a must-visit destination.

Whether you’re an adventure enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a serene getaway, Antón Valley provides a perfect blend of outdoor activities, breathtaking scenery, and cultural experiences.

La India Dormida

One of the highlights of the area is La India Dormida, Spanish for “The Sleeping Indian Girl.” From a distance, the mountains resemble the womanly curves of a girl lying on her back, gazing at the sky. According to legend, Flor del Aire, the daughter of an Indigenous leader, fell in love with a Spanish conquistador and could not return the love of Yavari, a member of her own tribe. Overcome with sorrow, Flor del Aire died after Yavari threw himself off the mountain in despair. Nature was so touched by their tragic love story that new mountains arose in her shape.

Chorro El Macho waterfall

A short 15-minute loop trail from the road leads to Chorro El Macho, a 35-meter high waterfall nestled in the middle of El Valle’s tropical forest. The trail is accessible for nearly everyone, though steps can be a little steep and suspension bridges wobbly. Hiking sticks are provided if needed. The fresh water pellets from the waterfall provide a refreshing sensation on your face. Along the trail, keep an eye out for square trees – odd-looking cottonwood trees with actual square trunks, endemic to Antón Valley. You can also spot several exotic flowers such as orchids, birds of paradise, and hibiscus, with their vibrant colors and woodsy scent carrying through the air. Occasional monkey or sloth sightings add to the trail’s charm. Hidden below the falls, a fresh river water pool offers a chilly but refreshing dip, perfect for those looking to cool off in a natural setting. Make sure to bring your bathing suit for a relaxing swim in the natural whirlpool.

The serene atmosphere and breathtaking natural beauty of Antón Valley provide an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
