The twin resorts of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo on the Pacific Coast of Mexico are a true delight for those who are looking for a beach break. The modern resorts of Ixtapa and the more rustic hotels of Zihuatanejo provide some great places to stay and a home base for great things to do in Ixtapa.

The facilities for children and families in the area aren’t as developed as Cancun, but there are still so many things to do that will provide some truly wonderful memories.

Swimming with Dolphins

Suitable for children over eight years old, swimming with dolphins will probably be one of the most memorable events of their childhood.

Run by the town’s aquarium, Delfiniti Ixtapa, the session begins with an introduction before spending 45 minutes in the pool with the dolphins. Children should be comfortable around animals as the dolphins are inquisitive and interested in their new playmates. The dolphins will play and approach you and your children in the pool and will play games and may even give you a tow along in the pool.

Explore the Interior on an ATV

In Ixtapa things to do aren’t just based around water. There are several companies that offer ATV tours to explore the beaches or head into the interior beyond the towns. The lush green forests and muddy tracks and river crossings are thrilling but safe enough for kids. This activity is great for older teenagers, while those over twelve years old can also join the trip as a passenger.

The coast around Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo is very beautiful and if you want to see more than the beach hop into a kayak. Here tours are a great way of seeing its diverse geography and wildlife. Don’t miss the mangrove forests along the coast as they are beautiful photo opportunities.
If you are traveling with younger children there is a kayaking lagoon a short bus trip or drive away with very calm waters that are perfect for learning to kayak.

Spend the Afternoon at the Magic World Aquatic Park

This water park is one of the best ways to beat the Mexican heat and have a lot of fun. Perfect for all ages with a range of pools, flumes, and slides which provide a great way to cool off.
Cruising around the Lazy River is ideal for adults and young children. There are also a range of slides for more adventurous younger children who can ride with their parents. Thrill seeking teenagers can head over faster and steeper. When you grow tired of the water check out the pirate-themed play area to dry off.

This lovely beach is protected by a rocky bar a short distance out into the ocean, which means that the waves here are small and tame. It is one of the best things to do in Ixtapa for the afternoon as a family as the beach provides a safe place where children can paddle and swim in the calm waters while there are also plenty of facilities.

The white sand and lovely warm water here are typical of the other beaches in the area too. Don’t worry about bored older children as there are great snorkeling opportunities to keep them occupied.

There are so many great things to do in Ixtapa and the best part is you won’t have all the crowds of other sun destinations. It may just become your next family favourite!
